Tub-to-Shower Conversion: What to Expect, What It Costs, and Whether It's Worth It

Tub-to-shower conversion is the single most common bathroom project we do in Austin. Most clients have a tub-shower combo they never use as a tub. Converting it to a proper walk-in shower makes daily life noticeably better.

What the Process Looks Like

Day 1: Demolition We remove the existing tub and tub surround. Inspect the subfloor and walls for water damage — this is where surprises show up. Any damaged framing or subfloor gets replaced before waterproofing.

Days 2–3: Waterproofing This is the step most homeowners never see but it's the most important one. We install a waterproofing membrane (Schluter Kerdi or Wedi board) on the floor and all walls. No shortcuts here — this is what prevents water damage inside your walls over the next 20 years.

Days 4–6: Tile Floor tile first, then walls. We set the drain and slope the floor so water runs toward it properly. Wall tile goes up. Niche installation if you have one. Grout after tile sets (usually 24 hours).

Day 7: Glass and Fixtures Frameless glass enclosure installation. Valve trim, showerhead, and handles. Caulk all seams. Job complete.

What It Costs

A standard tub-to-shower conversion in Austin runs $8,000–$18,000 depending on:

  • Tile selection (budget tile vs. large-format porcelain vs. natural stone)
  • Glass enclosure (framed vs. semi-frameless vs. frameless)
  • Whether the walls need repair or replacement
  • Niche installation

Is It Worth It?

If you never use your tub as a tub, yes. Every time you walk into a properly designed walk-in shower, you'll notice the difference. The only reason to keep a tub is if you have young kids who need baths, or if your home has only one bathroom (buyers expect at least one tub in the house).
